Tidal Seawater Pool Could Return To Scarborough Decades After Closure

A community-led campaign is pushing to bring a tidal seawater pool back to Scarborough for the first time since 1989, aiming to boost local amenities, health, and tourism on the Yorkshire Coast.

A new tidal seawater pool could soon transform the Scarborough coastline for the first time since the town's previous facility closed in 1989.

The community-led project aims to reintroduce the much-loved coastal attraction to the area, providing a safe and accessible environment for outdoor swimming. Spearheaded by the Scarborough Sea Swimming CIC, the campaign has identified Children's Corner in South Bay as the preferred location for the new development.

Local amenities, tourism, and public health are all expected to see a significant boost if the ambitious plans go ahead. Campaigners hope the facility will offer new opportunities for leisure, education, and mental wellbeing.

Peter, who is part of the group working to deliver the sea pool back to Scarborough, explained the broad benefits the project aims to bring to both residents and visitors:

"Well, it's basically a proposal for the whole community, both here in Scarborough and other areas coming into it. To give it a leisure, leisure side, educational side, and also the mental health side as well. So it's been proposed. We got a feasibility study sorted. So now we're just trying to sort out the finance and get things moving basically."

Discussions are already underway with industry experts to move the project from the initial proposal stage into physical planning and development.

Karen, who is also an integral part of the campaign group, outlined the crucial next steps for the initiative as they look to finalise the exact placement and structure of the pool:

"We're pretty determined. So that keeps us going. And we're at the stage now where we're talking to marine engineers and architects so we can get more detailed ground investigations and technical surveys done, which will give us more confirmation of the design and the location. So it could be either somewhere slightly to the south of the spa or to the north of the spa, but we definitely want it to be to be kind of fairly central, accessible and for people to use."

The addition of a tidal pool is expected to serve as a catalyst for further improvements and investment along the seafront.

Peter believes the development will draw more people to the Yorkshire Coast, generate positive publicity, and stimulate the local economy:

"Well, basically, it's to improve the facilities locally near the spa or very close to the spa. Build the the tidal pool up and then basically the amenities will then follow. And then that will attract the people coming in, word of mouth, more publicity. And basically the health and wealth of the local area. It's been successful in other parts of the UK, so why can't it be here as well? We we want it here."

The drive to restore this historic feature to the coastline is fuelled by a strong sense of local pride and a desire to see Scarborough match the offerings of other coastal destinations across the country.

Karen emphasised how essential a sea pool is to the cultural identity and appeal of the seaside town:

"Scarborough without a sea pool is is fish without chips. It just would really top it off. There's loads of other seaside towns still have their sea pools and we want one back here in Scarborough. And we're we're pretty determined and confident."

With feasibility studies now completed and talks with marine engineers ongoing, the Scarborough Sea Swimming CIC is heavily focused on securing the necessary funding to turn this long-awaited coastal vision into a reality for the town.
