Ambulance crews in Scarborough are appealing for community donations to transform a dilapidated outdoor area into a wellbeing space at their new station.
An urgent appeal for community support has been launched to help transform a dilapidated outdoor space for emergency workers.
Ambulance crews in Scarborough are seeking donations and grants to overhaul a neglected area at their new station into a safe and welcoming relaxation space.
Staff are preparing to relocate to the new Scarborough Ambulance Station at the end of August, which is being described as an exciting new chapter for the team and the local community.
However, the move has been impacted by the news that a dedicated relaxation area will not be officially funded.
The lack of financial support means crews will be left without a suitable outdoor environment to rest and recover between emergency call-outs.
Abi Andrew, a staff member who works at the station, explained the situation facing the team:
"At the end of August, we will be moving into our new Ambulance Station in Scarborough, marking an exciting new chapter for our team and the community we serve."
Despite the positive move to the new base, workers have been told that financial backing for a wellbeing space will not be provided by the Trust.
Abi Andrew said:
"Unfortunately, I have been informed by our Locality Manager that no funding has been made available by the Trust to create an outdoor space where our staff can take breaks and spend valuable downtime between emergency call-outs."
An existing outdoor area is present at the new site, but it is currently unusable and unsafe for the emergency teams.
A complete overhaul is required before the space can be transformed into a welcoming environment where colleagues can relax and recharge during their downtime.
Abi outlined the scale of the work needed:
"Whilst there is an existing outdoor area at the station, it is currently in a state of complete disrepair and requires a complete overhaul before it can become a safe, welcoming, and usable space for staff. Transforming this neglected area into a comfortable outdoor environment would provide a valuable space for colleagues to relax and recharge during their breaks."
The wellbeing of frontline staff is being highlighted as an essential priority, particularly given the high-pressure nature of their roles.
Workers believe that having access to a revitalised outdoor space, complete with seating and planting, would significantly boost morale and mental health.
In a direct plea to local charities and potential donors, Abi said:
"Supporting staff wellbeing is essential, and having access to a welcoming outdoor area would provide a much-needed space to rest, recharge, and recover during busy shifts. We believe that a revitalised outdoor space with seating and planting could make a significant difference to staff wellbeing, morale, and mental health. We are therefore reaching out to ask whether your charity would consider supporting this project through a grant or donation."
The team hopes that community investment will help create a meaningful and lasting contribution to the daily lives of the ambulance crews.
Abi added:
"Thank you for taking the time to consider our request. By investing in this outdoor space, you would be making a meaningful contribution to staff wellbeing for the staff at Scarborough Ambulance Station."
