Scarborough Care Home Owner Invites Prime Minister To See Broken Care System Firsthand

A Scarborough care home owner has launched a direct video appeal urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to visit the Yorkshire Coast and witness the daily reality of the UK's social care system.

A direct video appeal has been launched by Mike Padgham, who owns five care facilities in the coastal town. He has campaigned on the issue for more than thirty-five years and wants the country's leader to witness the frontline delivery of social care first hand.

The campaign aims to highlight the severe financial and emotional toll placed upon vulnerable people and their loved ones. Mr Padgham has joined forces with two women, Caroline and Ann, who both have relatives in care. Together, they are speaking on behalf of families and care workers across the country who feel their daily experiences have gone unheard for far too long.

The financial burden of care remains a pressing issue for many households. Relatives have shared their struggles with mounting weekly costs and the heart-breaking reality of seeing life savings entirely depleted to fund essential support.

Caroline and Ann detailed the severe financial impact the current system is having on their families:

Wendy had to sell everything, what she'd worked really hard for over all these years in order to fund her social care over the last 20 years when she's developed dementia. My relative is been in a care home for 10 years. We're paying £1,200 a week for her keep. We really want to start a discussion to find out what is going to happen going forward, it can't go on forever like this.

The invitation follows recent comments from the Prime Minister regarding his own father's personal experience of dementia care. During a speech delivered at a care home in Golders Green on the 29th July, Mr Burnham set out his ambition to build a National Care Service. He starkly described the current system as being as unfair as American healthcare.

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has also been formally invited to join the proposed visit to the Yorkshire Coast. Her husband, former politician Ed Balls, previously spent time at one of Mr Padgham's care homes for a fly-on-the-wall BBC documentary broadcast in 2021.

During the filming of that programme, Mr Balls experienced daily life as both a staff member and a care home resident. His immersion in the role included staying overnight at the Scarborough facility and being moved using a mechanical hoist.

Local political representation was also highlighted in the appeal. Scarborough and Whitby MP Allison Hume has been praised for her local efforts, with campaigners hoping she will accompany the Prime Minister should he accept the invitation to the coast.

In his video message, Mike Padgham addressed the Prime Minister directly, offering positive ideas and practical solutions to help accelerate much-needed changes to the social care sector.
