Scarborough's iconic Central Tramway has been officially shortlisted for the Seaside Heritage Network's 2025 Bucket and Spade top seaside experiences, but they need your vote!
This nomination recognises the tramway's significant contribution to Britain's rich seaside heritage.
The Central Tramway, established in 1881, is described as Scarborough's "iconic cliff railway full of character and charm". According to the company, it provides a "warm Yorkshire welcome" and is committed to preserving its Victorian heritage while maintaining "the highest standards in modern engineering and operational safety".
It stands as one of the country's busiest cliff railways and is recognised as a site of local historical significance. The company actively shares its "rich social and industrial history through educational talks, tours, and books," and also offers a companion scheme for local residents to access reduced fares and updates.
The Seaside Heritage Network defines seaside heritage as encompassing both tangible and intangible elements linked to the popular mass tourism culture from the 19th and 20th centuries up to the present day. The network states that it is "important to recognise and celebrate this heritage" because "seaside tourism was an industry that created its own distinct architectural legacy". This legacy, according to the network, provides "the nostalgic backdrop to modern seaside tourism, making our coastal resorts interesting and increasingly dynamic places".
Among the network's key aims are to bring together individuals and groups with a shared interest in seaside heritage around the UK, to celebrate its "unique contribution...to British life," and to "demonstrate the importance of built heritage to the continuation of that legacy". The network also seeks "to raise the profile of seaside heritage by giving it a collective voice".
Voting for the 2025 Bucket and Spade top seaside experiences is currently open, with the deadline for casting votes set for 30 August 2025. The winners, including the successful entries from the shortlist, are scheduled to be revealed at the Seaside Heritage Network's 'Big Day In' online event on Saturday 6 September.
