North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member for Managing our Environment has acknowledged ongoing issues with bin collections in Scarborough but expressed confidence that the service will soon improve as routes are rationalised.
North Yorkshire's bin chief has admitted that the refuse collection service in Scarborough is currently a problem, but has reassured residents that the situation will improve.
North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member for Managing our Environment, Richard Foster, acknowledged that there have been operational issues in various locations since the new unitary authority was formed in 2023.
The formation of the new council involved bringing multiple separate district services together under one county-wide umbrella. According to Councillor Foster, this transition initially resulted in too many missed bins as the authority worked to integrate the different operations.
The council has been attempting to resolve these issues by tweaking operations across the county. This has included altering collection routes and transitioning staff onto a four-day working week.
While the Executive Member for Managing our Environment noted that early problems in other parts of North Yorkshire have now been successfully sorted out, he conceded that Scarborough is still experiencing ongoing difficulties with its refuse collections.
Despite the current challenges on the Yorkshire Coast, the council remains optimistic. Councillor Foster maintains that the ongoing work to rationalise the bin service will soon resolve the outstanding issues in the town, bringing performance in line with the rest of the county.
Councillor Foster, said:
"We are bringing the services together, and we were missing probably too many bins, if you know what I mean. We had a problem with Harrogate to start with, but we seem to have got on top. We've sort of moved problems around as we've changed services and things like that and just started to tweak things a bit, altering routes and going onto the four-day week. So, there was a problem in Northallerton but again, I think we're on top of that, and the other area where we probably got problems is Scarborough still, but again working with that and as we move forward and, you know, rationalise the bin service through Scarborough as well. We'll catch up as well. So, I'm confident we're moving in the right direction and we've still more to do, but we're pretty good now, nationally, I think, on on our on our averages, for for how many we're picking up. So, I'm happy with the work that the service is doing, really."
