Firefighters in the Scarborough area dealt with two serious incidents in the space of an hour, including a basement flat fire and a suspected arson attack on a caravan.
Firefighters across the Scarborough area experienced a demanding and busy night after being called out to tackle two separate fire incidents within the space of just one hour.
The sequence of events began when crews from Scarborough were initially dispatched to a property in Trafalgar Square at 21:40, following the activation of a fire alarm within a block of flats.
Upon arrival at the Scarborough location, the emergency responders conducted a search and discovered that a fire had broken out in a basement flat.
The firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze and subsequently worked to ventilate the premises in order to clear the accumulated smoke from the building.
According to the official incident report, it was confirmed that there were no occupants present inside the basement flat at the time the fire occurred.
Detailing the aftermath of the Trafalgar Square incident, a spokesperson for the fire service stated:
"Extensive fire damage to the room of origin, the kitchen, with additional heat and smoke damage throughout the premises. Fire investigation will continue tomorrow."
Exactly one hour later, at 22:40, emergency services were alerted to a second significant blaze, this time situated on Cayton Low Road in the Eastfield area.
Fire crews from nearby Filey and Sherburn were deployed to respond to the incident, which involved a caravan that had been left at the side of the road.
Upon reaching the scene on Cayton Low Road, the firefighters utilised a hose reel to effectively extinguish the burning caravan.
The fire service confirmed the outcome of the Eastfield blaze, providing an update on the condition of the vehicle and the suspected cause. A spokesperson said:
"Extensive fire damage to the caravan which was extinguished by use of a hose reel. Cause believed deliberate."
Following the initial assessment by the fire service that the caravan blaze was likely started on purpose, police officers attended the scene to take over the investigation.
The police subsequently closed Cayton Low Road to ensure public safety, secure the area, and manage the ongoing situation.
Authorities have confirmed that they are now officially treating the Eastfield caravan fire as an act of arson.
