The monthly Staintondale Moorland Railway event returns this Sunday, offering train rides and garden refreshments while raising money for the Samaritans.
The Staintondale Moorland Railway is set to welcome visitors back this Sunday for its regular monthly event.
Organisers have been working hard to prepare the site, which will offer a range of activities and refreshments alongside the main attraction. Visitors will be able to enjoy the railway's garden, purchase tea, coffee, and cakes, and take part in a tombola.
The miniature trains will be running throughout the afternoon, operating on a casual basis where guests can hop on and off by simply leaving a donation in a collection bucket. The team is also prepared to keep the trains running and the hot drinks pouring even if the British weather brings rain.
Additionally, the railway is actively seeking new volunteers to join their existing group of supporters. The current team includes people from all walks of life, ranging in age from eighteen to over eighty.
Lisa Williams, one of the organisers of the Staintondale Moorland Railway, said:
"We've got a lovely garden that we've been working very hard on and we sell lots of cakes and tea and coffee and we have a tombola. But most of all, we have all the the trains running throughout the afternoon. So you just hop on and off just leaving a donation in in the bucket. So it's yeah, it's it should be a good day. We just, you know, if it rains, it rains. We'll still have tea and coffee and we'll run trains as often as we can in between the showers. We've got such a wonderful team of of supporters, helpers. But if there's anybody out there that fancies joining our team, as volunteers, we'd be delighted to hear from people. We've got ages from 18 to 80 plus here from all walks of life, and if anybody would just like to come along, you don't have to be railway mad or know anything about trains."
This Sunday's event will also feature a special partnership with the Samaritans, with the railway raising money for the charity.
A team of trained Samaritans will be attending the event to discuss the work they do and to provide a listening ear for anyone who might need it. The charity attended the railway last year, which proved to be highly successful, particularly for visitors who had experienced the loss of a loved one and found comfort in having someone to talk to while exploring the grounds.
Lisa added:
"It's the Samaritans, a fabulous team of people come along on the Sunday and it's lovely because they are all trained, Samaritan trained people, I can't think what they're called. They'll all be here to talk to people as well as, you know, discuss what Samaritans do, but they're there with a listening ear for the afternoon as well, which is lovely. So, I think if you've just got somebody that's wandering around the garden, you can just, you know, link up with, have a chat. They did it last year and it was so successful. So many people that had lost somebody dear to them, etc., were able to have a chat to them. So, it was really useful. Really nice. And we're raising money for them as well. So, so it's hopefully a win-win situation."
