Borough Council leader Steve Siddons hopes the new unitary authority for North Yorkshire will have 'a local face' and says that could be in the form of a town council.
Scarborough Borough Council will cease to exist in April 2023
The government has decided to replace all North Yorkshire's local authorities with a single unitary authority which will replace the county, district and borough councils.
The government had asked for proposal for local government reform last year.
The single council plan had been backed by the county council, an alternative plan to split the county in to separate East and West authorities had been backed by the district council leaders including Scarborough Borough Council leader Steve Siddons.
Speaking on This is the Coast, he gave his reaction to the announcement
The alternate plan that had been supported by the district council leaders would have created an eastern county that would have taken in the Scarborough Borough along with Ryedale, Selby and York.
Steve Siddons that would have kept decision making more local. He hopes the new authority will maintain a local presence and says it's likely that Scarborough will end up with a town council like Whitby and Filey already have.
Elections for the new authority are due to take place in May next year with the new council taking over in April 2023.
