Maximum hackney carriage fares across North Yorkshire will increase by five percent from August to help drivers cope with rising fuel costs.
Maximum hackney carriage fares will increase five percent across North Yorkshire.
The new rates will take effect on August 1st.
Tariff one charges will rise from £2.22 to £2.33 per mile. Waiting times on this tariff will jump from £20.23 to £21.24 per hour.
Tariff two rates will increase from £3.15 to £3.31 per mile. Hourly waiting times for this band will reach £30.35.
Tariff three fares will climb from £4.20 to £4.41 per mile. Waiting times on the highest tariff will hit £40.47 per hour.
Additional charges will remain unchanged. Taxi drivers will retain the right to charge lower amounts than the maximum fares at their own discretion.
Fuel prices have climbed steadily since the war in the Middle East. The hackney carriage trade submitted three requests to review the current table of fares, which has remained static since July 2024. A previous review in September 2025 resulted in no changes.
North Yorkshire Council's executive committee approved the variation following a public consultation.
Councillor Richard Foster said:
"Costs have gone up for taxi industry through obviously the fuel prices which I think we've all seen. Although they've come back a bit recently, they're still a lot higher than last time we we set the taxi prices.
And alongside that, we've also got things like the increase in the employers NI. We've had a few responses mainly from the trade saying that they are very desperate for this. The trade have done two years without an increase whatsoever."
A statutory notice was published in May inviting objections from interested parties. All licence holders received emails outlining the proposed variations.
The consultation generated five responses. One respondent requested an increase greater than five percent, while two commenters suggested fares should remain at their current levels. One person misunderstood the proposals but expressed satisfaction once officials explained the changes.
Councillor Mark Crane said:
"We've asked taxi drivers in the past about whether or not to have an increase and there hasn't always been unanimity in whether or not there should be. So it's pleasing to hear now that there does seem to be some unanimity amongst them, and therefore, we've all seen petrol prices go up significantly in recent months, and I think it's right that we're making this decision with taxi drivers having the right to charge a lower fare if they wish."
Private hire vehicles will not face these mandatory limits. The maximum fare table applies exclusively to hackney carriages, which passengers can hail on the roadside, find at a taxi rank, or pre-book by telephone.
Proprietors wishing to charge the increased rates will incur a small, one-off cost for meter calibration.
A regular review of the maximum fares supports economic growth and incentivises work in the hackney carriage industry. The Department for Transport recommends that authorities give taxi drivers the ability to earn a sufficient income to encourage a reliable service, particularly during anti-social hours.
The updated fare structure applies equally to all licensed hackney carriage vehicles. Drivers cannot make additional charges for carrying mobility aids or providing reasonable assistance to disabled passengers.
Regular reviews also ensure drivers can plan for future investment in new vehicles, which will mitigate the environmental impact of licensed vehicles in North Yorkshire.
