Drink and Drug Driving Purge in North Yorkshire

Police have made almost 200 arrests for drink and drug driving in York and North Yorkshire in five weeks.

Between 11 June and 19 July 2026, North Yorkshire Police officers arrested 97 people on suspicion of drink driving – and 95 on suspicion of drug driving.

A further 31 arrests were made after motorists failed to provide samples for analysis.

As part of a seasonal increase in enforcement activity, police have been carrying out extra high-visibility patrols, targeted stop checks and road-side operations at locations across the force area.

Speaking at the start of the operation, Chief Inspector Tom Ibbetson warned that there was no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired and that robust action would be taken against anyone who chose to drive under the influence of drink or drugs.

Around 10% of arrests (18) followed a road traffic collision – highlighting the very real risks that drink and drug drivers pose to themselves and other road users.

More than a third of those arrested have already been charged and are facing a day in court. Most of the other cases are awaiting forensic blood analysis results to come back before further action is taken.

Meanwhile, Police say enforcement remains a year-round priority, and officers will continue to target those who drive while under the influence.

If you're found to be over the drink-drive limit, or driving while impaired by drugs, you can receive:

  • a criminal record
  • a maximum penalty of six months in prison
  • an unlimited fine
  • an automatic driving ban of at least one year

The maximum penalty for causing death whilst driving dangerously under the influence of alcohol or drugs is life imprisonment.

If you believe someone is about to drive under the influence, dial 999 - Police will always aim to respond immediately.
