Early pressure almost yielded a breakthrough for the visitors within the opening two minutes of the match. Stuart Rose found crucial space at the near post and directed a swift effort towards the goal. A Northallerton defender reacted quickly to block the shot behind for a corner, which ultimately failed to trouble the home side but clearly signalled Whitby's strong attacking intent.
The opening period remained tightly contested until Northallerton struck first midway through the half. Josh Allen rose highest from a corner in the twenty-third minute and powered a downward header towards the target. George Scaife, who stepped in to deputise for the absent Jack Norton in the Whitby goal, managed to get a hand to the ball but could not prevent it from crossing the line.
A controversial penalty decision allowed the hosts to double their advantage just six minutes later. Match official Samuel Packer pointed to the spot after Charlie Stirland was penalised for an alleged foul inside the penalty area. The decision appeared soft, with only slight contact from behind and the Northallerton player remaining on his feet. Rose successfully turned the ball home from a Ben Turner free-kick, only for the assistant referee's flag to disallow the effort for a marginal offside. Meanwhile, Northallerton almost extended their lead further just before the break, but their trialist striker drilled an effort wide from the edge of the box.
Determination to find a route back into the match drove Whitby forward in the second half. Stan Hewitt delivered an inviting deep cross towards the back post five minutes after the restart. Lucas Reed arrived completely unmarked but directed his resulting effort straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.
Hewitt almost found the back of the net himself in the fifty-sixth minute after racing through on goal. A significant bobble on the pitch disrupted his low strike at the crucial moment, sending the ball off target just as he looked set to test Fairless.
Defensive resilience kept the visitors in the game, highlighted by an excellent save from Scaife in the sixty-ninth minute. The stand-in goalkeeper tipped Joe Martin's angled strike safely away from danger. Hickman continued to threaten at the other end, seeing his first-time effort from the edge of the area blocked by a resolute home defence with twelve minutes remaining.
Sustained pressure finally earned Whitby a breakthrough in the eighty-first minute. A foul on Marley Grant inside the penalty area resulted in a spot-kick for the Seasiders. Reed stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, finding the bottom-left corner even though the goalkeeper dived the correct way.
The successful conversion set up a tense finale for both sides. Northallerton ultimately held firm under late pressure to secure the victory and hand Whitby a narrow defeat ahead of their final pre-season preparations.
