Nine new affordable homes are being built in Skipsea to help rehouse East Yorkshire residents who are losing their properties to the rapidly eroding coastline.
Residents facing the loss of their homes to the sea will receive priority for a new affordable housing development in East Yorkshire.
Coastal erosion claims up to four and a half metres of land a year along some parts of the East Yorkshire coastline, making it one of the fastest eroding coastlines in Europe. Properties on streets such as Green Lane in Skipsea face the imminent threat of falling into the sea, and several households have already been forced to abandon their properties.
Nine new properties will offer a practical housing option for displaced locals. The homes will sit on the site of former agricultural buildings at Church Farm in Skipsea, located approximately one mile inland from the advancing coastline.
The development features five two-bedroom bungalows alongside four houses with two and three bedrooms. All the properties will be available for social rent.
The project will cost three point one million pounds to complete. Funding includes one million pounds from Homes England, an eight hundred thousand pound contribution from the Changing Coasts East Riding project, and two hundred and forty-four thousand pounds from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Housing association Broadacres will fund the remainder of the balance, while WB Construction will build the homes.

The housing scheme forms part of a wider initiative to help coastal communities navigate the long-term impacts of the changing landscape. East Riding of Yorkshire Council secured fifteen million pounds for the Changing Coasts East Riding project in 2022. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs provides the funding, which the Environment Agency manages as part of the national Flood and Coastal Innovation Programme.
