East Riding Council Leader, Anne Handley, has emphasised the significance of the Humber region to the UK's energy infrastructure and the keen interest from foreign firms in investing in the area.
Councillor Handley spoke of the Humber region as "something really, really special", noting that it is the UK's largest industrial cluster and a major energy producer. According to Handley, the area is of national importance in helping the government meet its clean power 2030 and net zero 2050 targets. It produces more than 20% of the country's electricity.
Councillor Handley says a delegation of over 20 Norwegian visitors were recently hosted by PX Group at Salt End Chemical Park. The visit aimed to showcase the facilities for inward investment and to highlight PX's capabilities in Norway. The delegation was shown the strength of energy integration and industrial symbiosis at the park, as well as how industry and the public sector are working together.
According to the council leader, there is £15 billion of investment standing by, waiting to come into the area. However, she noted that progress is being hindered by bureaucratic hurdles and regulations
Speaking directly to the government, Councillor Handley urged decision makers to "give us the green light and let us show you what we together can achieve in this region". She also said that the council has been lobbying the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate, Ed Miliband, to avoid further delays in the region, particularly in hydrogen projects.
