Filey Lions Gear Up For Annual 10K Beach Race

The Filey Lions are finalising preparations for their upcoming 10k beach run on the 14th of June, alongside a host of other community fundraising activities planned for the summer months.

The picturesque Yorkshire Coast town will soon play host to a highly anticipated sporting event, as the dedicated members of the Filey Lions make their final preparations for an upcoming 10k beach race.

Scheduled to take place on the 14th of June, the seaside run promises to bring the community together for an energetic morning of fitness and fundraising. Event organiser Mike Gibson and the rest of the charitable group have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the coastal run is a resounding success for both athletes and spectators alike.

Participants are instructed to gather near the cobbled landing adjacent to the local sailing club, where the official sign-in process will commence at 9 am. Following a thorough registration period to ensure all competitors are accounted for, the athletes will set off along the beautiful shoreline at exactly 10 am.

To help competitors limber up and prepare their muscles before the starting whistle blows, Zoe Ruston from Garage Dance will lead an engaging group stretching session. She returns to the vital role after successfully guiding the pre-run routine during the previous iteration of the event. Additionally, the energetic Phoenix cheerleaders will be stationed at the venue to enthusiastically send the runners on their way and warmly greet them upon their return to the finish line.

Speaking about the athletic event and the impressive turnout expected, Mike said:

"We had about 250 runners last year and so far we've already got 152 registered and the age ranges are like between 17 and 75 so it's a real diverse selection of runners. Registration starts from 9am and that's down by the sailing club on the near the cobbled landing with the race due to start at 10 o'clock. We've got a warm-up from a lady called Zoe Ruston who runs Garage Dance, she did the warm-up for us last year and went down really well. We've got the Phoenix cheerleaders down there cheering the runners off and welcoming them back. So let's just say it should be a fun day."

The charitable organisation has secured significant backing from several prominent local businesses for this year's coastal run. Generous sponsorship has been provided by Hunters Estate Agents, Tesco, Wold Top Brewery, the Filey Town Tourism Association, and Five Leys.

Beyond the sand and surf of the June competition, the local Lions club maintains an incredibly busy schedule throughout the summer months. Their primary objective remains firmly rooted in generating vital funds to distribute back into the surrounding area to support those in need.

Future activities on their bustling calendar include a charity golf tournament planned for July, as well as a highly anticipated ball race scheduled for August. Members of the group will also be making regular appearances at various food festivals across the region to raise awareness for their cause.

The unwavering dedication of the group has already yielded significant benefits for the seaside town. Recently, the team successfully installed a brand-new defibrillator unit on the cobbled landing, positioned conveniently outside the lifeboat station. This crucial, life-saving medical equipment will be continually overseen and serviced by the Lions.

Highlighting their recent charitable donations and extensive upcoming schedule, Mike said:

"We've recently given away just under £10,000 pounds to 30 different organisations, we've just purchased a new defib machine which is based on the cobbled landing outside the lifeboat station and that's managed and maintained by Filey Lions. We've got the golf day which we do in July, we attend all the food festivals, we've got the ball race coming up in August. We're lucky we've got some great sponsors this year, we've got Hunters Estate Agents, we've got Tescos, Wold Top Brewery, Filey Town Tourism Association, Five Leys are all supporting us. This is what the Lions do it's raising money to put back into local community."
