Scarborough Athletic were 2-0 down at half time, but roared back in the 2nd half to grab a point, and unlucky not to take all three.
Scarborough Athletic staged a sensational second-half fightback to rescue a 2-2 draw against Buxton at the Moneyweb Stadium this afternoon.
Jonathan Greening's side were 2-0 down at the break. However, a transformed Seadogs performance in the second period ensured the spoils were shared in a thrilling National League North encounter.
The afternoon started in the worst possible fashion for Boro, who found themselves behind after just 28 seconds following a cross which found Moses who volleyed it past Ryan Whitley. Then, shortly before half time, Alex Brown gave the ball away to the speedy Johnny Johnston, who ran clear, forcing a superb save from Whitley, but then buried the rebound to double The Bucks lead.
The Seadogs went down the tunnel at halftime with a mountain to climb, leaving Greening frustrated with the defensive lapses.
Reflecting on the first-half performance, manager Jonathan Greening told This Is The Coast:
"You can't give teams two goals as easy as we have today in the first half, especially the first one after 35–40 seconds... it would have been miles better to come in at halftime 1-0 down."
Whatever the gaffer said to his players at half time worked wonders. Scarborough came out for the second half with renewed intensity, completely dominating the tempo and forcing Buxton backwards.
Scarborough pulled a goal back just 3 minutes into the second half. A Waldron cross found Jake Hull who's initial shot was scuffed, but he got a second chance and his shot powered past the Buxton keeper. Here's how we called it during commentary:
Boro relentlessly pressured the Buxton backline and half-time substitute Rio Allan was felled in the penalty area, before brilliantly converting the penalty kick, backed by a vocal crowd of nearly 1300.
Greening, speaking to Paddy, was full of praise for the second half display:
"I thought the attitude and application and the quality was miles better second half—the tempo—and like you said, potentially we could have nicked it at the end and got the full three points, but we were a little bit unlucky."
Despite late pressure from the Seadogs, including a dramatic goal-line scramble from a corner, Buxton held firm through the closing stages to see out the draw.
While Boro will feel they had the momentum to take all three points late on, the dramatic fightback demonstrates the immense character within the squad to rescue a valuable point against an in-form Buxton side, as pointed out by Greening:
"Second half it was all us. We've got a group of guys who always give 100% always, their attitude and commitment to the club is second to none."
