Whitby's Street Angels are looking for more volunteers so that they can expand their service.
The Street Angels provide night time patrols to help keep Whitby town centre safe and provide assistance to people returning home after a night out.
Currently they only have enough volunteers to deliver patrols twice a month but would like to be able to be out every Saturday.
Pam is one of the Street Angels she says they provide a range of support services.
At the moment the Street Angels can only patrol on two Saturdays a month because of a shortage of volunteers.
Pam says that ideally they would be out every weekend.
The Whitby Street Angels work in partnership with local organisations such as the local police, the ambulance service, the Council CCTV team, and local security services. Teams of three to five people patrol the streets and respond quickly if someone needs to help – with first aid – but also by calling the appropriate services if needed.
The Street Angels say they hope to prevent calling on those services in the first place by providing practical help like: picking up discarded bottles and glasses, helping people to get a taxi home, contacting friends or family, being a listening ear, chatting with people and providing flip flops to those without shoes.
Volunteers are asked to undertake one patrol a month and must be aged 18 or over. There are more details at https://www.street-angels.org.uk/get-involved/who-can-be-a-street-angel
