Crime Rates Drop Across North Yorkshire As Bicycle And Vehicle Thefts Plummet

Overall crime in North Yorkshire has fallen by nearly three per cent over the last twelve months, driven by significant reductions in bicycle thefts, vehicle offences, and shoplifting.

Overall crime incidents have fallen by nearly three per cent across North Yorkshire over the last twelve months.

New figures reveal a 2.8 per cent reduction in total offences between June 2025 and June 2026, bringing the number of recorded crimes down from 46,136 to 44,845.

Anti-social behaviour is also on the decline across the region. Communities within the Coast Command Area experienced a 5.1 per cent decrease in anti-social incidents, equating to 19 fewer cases compared to the previous year.

The wider county saw similar improvements, with the County Command Area recording a 12.7 per cent reduction in anti-social behaviour, resulting in 49 fewer incidents. The City Command Area noted a smaller 0.6 per cent drop.

Vehicle and property owners are seeing some of the biggest improvements in safety. Bicycle thefts plummeted by 30.6 per cent, dropping from 977 incidents down to 678.

Vehicle offences also fell sharply by 19.4 per cent, while non-residential burglaries decreased by 25.7 per cent. Residential dwelling burglaries saw a minor drop of 5.9 per cent.

Local businesses will benefit from a 10.7 per cent reduction in shoplifting, with incidents falling from 5,652 to 5,045. Meanwhile, victims of fraud saw a significant 36.8 per cent fall in cases, and thefts from a person dropped by 13 per cent.

North Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Tim Forber highlighted the positive trends.

He said:

"Over the course of the past 12 months,  as ever, there's always certain areas that that you will see a rising crime, but, you know, if you look at some of those key categories of crime, bicycle theft down 30%, shoplifting down 10% across the course of the year, vehicle crime down 19%.

So you've seen some really significant reductions in crime, overall crime down by 2.8%."

Despite the overall drop in crime volumes, certain types of offences are increasing across the county.

Robbery incidents jumped by 74.6 per cent, rising from 236 to 412 offences.

Possession of weapons increased by 17.4 per cent to 526 incidents, while drug offences rose by 11.4 per cent to 1,628 cases.

Sexual offences saw a 9.1 per cent rise, and public order offences climbed by 6.7 per cent. Violent crimes against the person also experienced a slight increase of 1.5 per cent, reaching 18,153 recorded incidents.

Arrest numbers remain largely stable across the county. Officers made 11,918 arrests over the period, representing a marginal decrease of 0.53 per cent compared to the 11,982 arrests made in the previous year.

Police recording practices show that 93.9 per cent of all reported crimes, excluding fraud, are being officially recorded. The data also confirms that 95.2 per cent of violent offences and 96.2 per cent of sexual offences are logged by officers.

Chief Constable Tim Forber explained the challenges surrounding the rise in robberies and outlined the force's commitment to tackling the issue.

He said:

"It's great that crime is coming down, but what we don't do is rest on our laurels.

We've had some issues over the course of the past 12 months, particularly in relation to robbery, now some of that is about how robbery is classified, but some of it is about issues with illegal e-bikes, that sort of thing.

We are absolutely determined that we're going to continue that trend, continue to drive down crime across North Yorkshire because it is and remains the safest county in England in terms of crime per capita and we're determined to keep it that way."
