Spitfire Display Cancelled For Scarborough Armed Forces Day But Five Air Displays Remain

Organisers of the Scarborough Armed Forces Day have confirmed that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire will no longer appear at Saturday's event, though five other air displays are still scheduled to go ahead.

Organisers of the Scarborough Armed Forces Day have announced that the highly anticipated Spitfire display will no longer take place at this Saturday's event.

The event team were informed today that the historic aircraft is unable to join the planned celebrations on the Yorkshire Coast.

The cancellation stems from operational challenges currently facing the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Due to general aircraft availability, the memorial flight is operating with a reduced fleet, meaning they have had to make significant alterations to their flying programme.

Consequently, the specific aircraft that had been allocated to perform in Scarborough has been reassigned.

It has now been tasked to support the National Armed Forces event, which is being held in Aldershot.

Despite the loss of the Spitfire, organisers are keen to emphasise that the day will still offer plenty of aerial entertainment for visitors.

It has been confirmed that attendees will still be treated to five other air displays throughout the day, ensuring the skies above Scarborough remain a key part of the celebrations.

A spokesperson for Scarborough Armed Forces Day said:

"Scarborough Armed Forces Day organisers have been informed today that the Spitfire will no longer be able to join us in Scarborough on Saturday.

Due to aircraft availability, the Battle of Britain Memorial flight is currently operating with a reduced number of aircrafts, which means that they have had to alter their programme.

Sadly that means the aircraft allocated to us has been tasked to support the National Armed Forces event in Aldershot.

We know you will be disappointed but we still have a fantastic line-up of events including other incredible air displays."

On Monday, the traditional raising of the Armed Forces Day Flag took place in Scarborough's Town Hall Gardens:

Members of the armed forces and veterans are set to be well looked after at Scarborough's Armed Forces Day.

A dedicated package of treats and experiences has been put together to ensure those who serve, or have served, feel specially recognised during their visit to the town.

The initiative aims to provide a memorable experience for military families, offering them a unique passport of activities that will guide them around the resort's various attractions.

In addition to the activities, complimentary traditional seaside treats, such as ice creams and sticks of rock, are intended to add an extra touch of celebration for the children of armed forces personnel.

The event on Saturday will serve as an opportunity for the Scarborough community to show their support and gratitude to the armed forces while providing a welcoming environment for the families.

One of the Armed Forces Day organisers, Major John Senior, explained how they plan to look after the visiting service personnel and their families during the coastal event.

Major John Senior said:

"We would invite the armed forces to come over here, their families come over here, and enjoy a really good day out here in Scarborough on Saturday. And we have a special bundle of extras for them. We have free ice creams for the children, sticks of rock, and a kind of a passport of activities around the resort specifically for military families. So I would ask them to come over and you'll have a wonderful day here in Scarborough".

Further details regarding the schedule and how to plan a visit can be found on the Scarborough Armed Forces Day website.
