A new Tesco Express store has opened its doors on Main Street in Seamer, creating nineteen jobs and offering a range of community support initiatives to local schools.
Everyday shopping options will expand for residents in Seamer following the opening of a new Tesco Express store.
The doors opened to customers on Main Street on Thursday bringing a boost to the local economy with the creation of nineteen jobs. Eighteen of the new team members are starting their very first roles with the supermarket chain.
The site also features a dedicated car park, an ATM, a Costa Coffee machine, and a post office to serve the village.
Store manager Austin Ferguson is leading the newly recruited team. He said:
"I’m delighted to be taking on the role of store manager at Seamer Express and bringing a new Tesco store to Scarborough. We’re looking forward to creating a friendly and supportive environment for both customers and colleagues.
I joined Tesco 13 years ago and have been working as a store manager for three years. With most of our colleagues just starting their career at Tesco, I’m excited to share my experience, helping them build their skills and growing as a team that we can all be proud of.
Opening a new store is always a team effort, and it’s been great to see everyone pull together to get everything ready. We look forward to opening our doors and making everyday shopping a little easier for people in the community."
Local primary pupils are already benefiting from the store's arrival in the area. Gladstone Road Primary School has received a £500 donation alongside a delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables, which is designed to encourage healthy eating habits among the children.
Further funding opportunities are also available for other educational and community projects through the retailer's Free Fruit and Veg for Schools programme. Grants of up to £1,500 can be claimed by local groups to support healthy food initiatives.
Shoppers will have a direct say in where this funding goes by using the familiar blue token voting system at the checkouts. Each funding round features three local projects, with financial support awarded based on the number of tokens each cause receives from the public as they leave the store.
The initiative is part of a wider partnership with the charity Groundwork UK. The supermarket aims to help more than one million schoolchildren access fresh produce through its various school and community programmes.
Surplus food from the Seamer store will also be redistributed to local charities and community groups at the end of each day. The Main Street branch is participating in the Community Food Connection scheme, which has provided more than 145 million meals to good causes across the UK since it originally launched in 2016.
Local schools and community projects wanting to secure their own funding are encouraged to apply for the Free Fruit and Veg for Schools grants via the supermarket's community website.
