A Scarborough-based training provider is celebrating a major achievement after delivering a vital educational programme to its one-thousandth learner.
Yorkshire Futures Training has successfully trained one thousand health and social care workers in the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism.
The organisation, which is part of the Yorkshire Care Group, delivers the programme to support various healthcare providers in delivering more inclusive and informed care for people living with autism and learning disabilities.
The milestone session was delivered by the Scarborough team at St Leonard’s Hospice in York, an organisation which supports people with life-limiting or terminal illnesses.
The training sessions focus heavily on practical steps that staff members can take to improve communication, recognise specific patient needs, and make reasonable adjustments across different health and care settings.
The mandatory programme is named in memory of Oliver McGowan, a young man who had autism and a learning disability.
In order to bring real-world insight into the learning environment, Yorkshire Futures Training delivers the educational sessions alongside two experts who have lived experience.
The training team provides both mandatory and bespoke training for employers, maintaining a strong focus on the health and social care sector.
They deliver the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training for organisations across Yorkshire and further afield, offering preferential rates for charities to help bring the vital training to organisations as cost-effectively as possible.
Vic Henderson, who serves as the Head of Workforce, Education, Learning and Development at St Leonard’s Hospice, praised the Scarborough provider for their collaborative approach.
Vic Henderson said:
"The training has been extremely helpful, and feedback from colleagues has been consistently positive.
What really stood out was how flexible and collaborative Yorkshire Futures Training were. They took the time to understand the pressures and realities of our organisation, and worked with us to find practical solutions that made the training possible.
Learning directly from people with lived experience made it feel authentic and accessible, and gave our team the confidence to ask questions. We’re looking forward to finding ways to work with Yorkshire Futures Training again."
The Scarborough-based provider has also supported numerous other charitable organisations across the region, including Saint Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough and Ryedale Special Families.
Simon Starling, Development Management at Yorkshire Futures Training, highlighted the importance of reaching the one-thousandth learner.
Simon Starling said:
"Training 1,000 learners is a significant milestone for us. We work closely with services to deliver the programme in a practical way that fits their teams and supports better experiences for autistic people and people with a learning disability.
We want to support local charities and have delivered training for numerous similar organisations across the region, including Saint Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough, Dove House Hospice in Hull, St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds, Ryedale Special Families and Artizan International in Harrogate.
We’re delighted the milestone session took place at St Leonard’s Hospice, and we appreciate the team’s commitment to strengthening inclusive care."
Any organisations that are interested in booking the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism are encouraged to contact Yorkshire Futures Training.
