Scarborough based showbiz producer Tony Peers has died surrounded by family and friends.
The team at the company that bears his name "Tony Peers Ltd" made the announcement today saying:
"It is with great sadness that we announce that Scarborough showbiz legend Tony Peers has taken his final bow. Our wonderful producer, manager and friend sadly fell asleep for the last time in the early hours of this morning.
All at Tony Peers Limited are devastated by this news and in Tony’s words “the show must go on.” We will be continuing to lead all future productions and keeping Tony’s pantomime legacy alive across the country for years to come."
Colleagues at Scarborough Spa added their thoughts, saying:
"Everyone at the Scarborough Spa is saddened to hear of the passing of Tony Peers.
Tony, who was involved in over 2,500 shows at the Spa as a performer, director, and latterly as producer of the famous Spa summer shows and Christmas pantomimes, passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family and friends."
Born in Wigan, Tony started his career in the 1960's, working at Butlins. It was here where he developed his skill in entertaining a crowd.
He went on to become a stand-up comedian, performing at many venues, and supporting some of the biggest names in entertainment.
He had many acting credits too, appearing in films and a number of television shows including Emmerdale and Coronation Street.
He moved to Scarborough in the 1980's to run the entertainment at what was then the 'Butlins Grand Hotel'.
In 1999 he formed Tony Peers Productions, creating summer shows and panto's which countless people have enjoyed over the years, right up to the present day.
In 2010, Tony welcomed Her Majesty The Queen to Scarborough to reopen the Open Air Theatre.
Local entertainers have been paying tribute.
Michael De Freitas, known as Magic Mike to many, says he first got to know Tony at The Grand Hotel:
Dave Marshall said he learned a lot about entertaining a crowd from Tony:
