A popular immersive installation which started life in Scarborough is heading for a national platform, as part of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture’s programme.
Made by Scarborough artist Steve Wintercroft and produced by charitable community producing company ARCADE, Grue is a fantastical world, built alongside the community entirely from recycled and repurposed cardboard.
The project has run for the last 3 years in Scarborough, involving over 5,000 residents through workshops or visits to the installation.
Grue invites audiences to step into a series of enchanting landscapes to meet a host of incredible characters. It features live performers, gentle lighting effects and a beautiful soundscape. A team of 11 artists make Grue happen, and for Bradford 2025 a new version will be created, in collaboration with Bradford’s communities.
Grue is led by Scarborough artist, Steve Wintercroft, founder of Wintercroft, an environmentally conscious design company specialising in helping people explore creativity through making.
Wintercroft’s iconic designs have played key roles in progressive conservation campaigns, films, theatre productions, TV & music videos. He has created work with Sir Paul McCartney, Bjork and Tracey Emin in the past. Wintercroft says:
‘Bradford 2025 will be showcasing some of the best artists in the world and we are delighted to be a representative for the Yorkshire Coast. This is a fantastic opportunity for a project that has been locally grown and loved to be seen and appreciated on a larger, City of Culture platform.’
Bradford 2025 will run from January 2025 to December 2025, and is a celebration of Bradford city and district, taking place across its city, towns, villages and greenspaces.
While Grue will not be taking place in Scarborough in 2024, the team behind it remain committed to the local area and are hoping to run the project again in late 2025.
Rach Drew, Co-Artistic Director and CEO of ARCADE, said,
‘As a very tiny team, funding and capacity meant it simply wasn’t possible for us to run Grue twice in quick succession. We are already working really hard on fundraising to make sure Grue can come home for Christmas 2025’
Organisers hope local audiences will take the trip to Bradford to see Grue and experience some of the other work that has been commissioned as part of the City of Culture programme.
Grue will be open in Bingley from the 8th February - 23rd February 2025.
