Scarborough Athletic Charged by FA Over Crowd Issues

The club confirms it has been charged by the FA over incidents at the Darlington game on January 2nd.

The match between Scarborough and Darlington was at one point stopped for around 35 minutes after reports that misogynist remarks had been shouted at a female match official.

A Scarborough supporter has since been given an indefinite ban from the Flamingo Land stadium following the disruption to the new year game.

Play was suspended for 35 minutes in the second half at the request of the match officials after reports that abuse was shouted at a female assistant referee. It's understood there were incidents of abuse in the first half from Darling ton Supporters and in the second half from Scarborough supporters.

During the game itself a series of loudspeaker announcements were made warning fans about discriminatory language.

Both clubs issued statements after the game condemning the behaviour.

In a statement today Scarborough Athletic confirmed they have now received a charge from the FA, the club say:

"Following the game on 02 January against Darlington FC at the Flamingo Land Stadium, we have been charged with a Breach of FA Rule E21.4 for Crowd Control with specific reference to the below:

It is alleged that during the fixture; "Scarborough Athletic FC failed to ensure that its spectators, and all persons purporting to be its supporters or followers, conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and failed to ensure those persons did not use words or otherwise behave in an improper and/or offensive and/or abusive and/or insulting manner with either express or implied reference to gender".

We have received an extension to the initial deadline to respond to the charge, given the significant amount of evidence provided and will respond accordingly.

Once we are aware of the outcome from the FA we will update supporters."

Darlington have confirmed that they have also been charged by the FA over the incident.

Speaking to This is the Coast in January, club chairman Trevor Bull said the club could be facing a fine or even a points deduction.
