The annual Scalby Fair week begins today, featuring a variety of community events, live entertainment, and an expanded classic car show, culminating in the main fair day on the 20th.
The highly anticipated Scalby Fair week gets underway today, bringing a packed schedule of events to the local community.
The annual festival, which has become a staple of the area's calendar, promises a mix of new attractions and returning favourites.
The annual Scalby Fair originally grew out of the Silver Jubilee celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen in 1977. Those initial Jubilee celebrations took the form of a giant street party, featuring tables running down the centre of the High Street from the Nags Head to St Laurence’s Church.
Today, the event has expanded significantly, offering a week-long celebration. Michael Whiteley, a member of the organising team, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming festivities and the broad range of activities planned for this year.
Michael Whiteley said:
"We're very excited and we've got lots of events starting this Friday, the 12th with a barn dance at the Newby and Scalby community hall. And and then we go right through every day, something right through until the 22nd when the flower festival ends.
But the big day is Scalby Fair day on the 20th. And we've got we've got it's bigger and better than ever, more stalls. We've got a second a second stage now at U Court where we've got lots of lots of performers, and we've got we've got Nancy Tilly. Yeah, we're looking forward to seeing her from Britain's Got Talent."
Alongside the main fair day, the organising team has focused on expanding successful additions from previous years. The inclusion of vintage vehicles proved popular during the last fair, prompting organisers to increase the scale of the display to include motorbikes.
Michael Whiteley said:
"The new event last year went very well, the vintage and classic car, and that's now been extended at the rugby club and doing motorbikes as well. We've had lots of people wanting to show off their vintage and classic cars and motorbikes. So we're looking forward to that being bigger and better than ever.
And we've got a new event on the Sunday. The YMCA are doing a show at Yew court on Sunday the 14th, so we're really looking forward to that. And yeah, really want to thank the owners of Yew court for giving up their their property to let us use it. It's a fantastic site. I'm sure it's going to become a big part of the fair in the future."
The week is also filled with evening entertainment and community gatherings, many of which are hosted at local venues such as the Nags Head and St Laurence's Church. The schedule is designed to offer something for everyone, from quizzes and treasure hunts to live music and floral displays.
Detailing the day-by-day itinerary, Michael Whiteley added:
"We've got a quiz with a Scalby theme at the Nag's Head on the Monday that's a new event. And then we've got the usual sort of just favourites really, the treasure hunt on the Tuesday, the 16th.
The wine tasting at the Nag's Head, there's still some tickets available for that on the Wednesday and that's food included as well. Beer festival on the Thursday, the 18th at the Nag's, and then we've got Soul Rider back again. They missed out last year but we've got Soul Rider on the 19th at the Nag's in the evening. That's a free event, normally very busy worth getting there early if you want to get a seat.
And then the Flower Festival which kicks off on the 19th with a preview on the Friday night with some wine and wine and nibbles for only £3. Wine and nibbles then watching seeing all the flowers and then that carries through right through the weekend.
And then we've got fair day on the 20th and then um in the church there's songs of praise on the uh at St. Lawrence's Church on the 21st at 10:30."
