Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume has challenged the Prime Minister on educational attainment on the Yorkshire Coast, securing backing for the 'Mission Coastal' initiative.
Scarborough and Whitby's Member of Parliament, Alison Hume, has raised the issue of educational attainment on the Yorkshire Coast directly with the Prime Minister.
During a session in the House of Commons, the local MP brought up a government coastal initiative designed to support young people in deprived areas.
She highlighted that despite the hard work of local school staff, current GCSE results in her constituency demonstrate a need for targeted intervention to help students.
Alison Hume MP said:
"Despite the efforts of dedicated teachers in Scarborough and Whitby, only 36% of pupils achieve grade five and above in both English and Maths GCSE. Does the Prime Minister agree with me that mission Coastal has the potential to deliver the same transformational impact for young people in deprived coastal communities as the London Challenge achieved and it's the kind of bold and targeted intervention that only a Labour government can deliver."
The MP compared the potential of the 'Mission Coastal' programme to the previous London Challenge, suggesting it could deliver a similar transformational impact for young people living in coastal communities.
In response to her question, Keir Starmer praised Ms Hume's efforts in championing the Yorkshire Coast and outlined the core objectives of the government's coastal initiative.
He explained that the programme is intended to ensure that all children have equal chances to succeed, regardless of where they grow up.
The Prime Minister said:
"Can I thank her for her work championing on such an important issue. Mission Coastal will help break the link between background and success, giving the most disadvantaged children, mentoring, career support, and enrichment opportunities because we believe that no matter where you grow up, every child deserves the same opportunities to succeed. Yes."
The 'Mission Coastal' initiative aims to break the link between a child's background and their future success by providing the most disadvantaged children with access to mentoring, career support, and additional enrichment opportunities.
