The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2026 (9th-15th February) by showcasing one of its Mechanical Apprentices, Charlie Bauckham, who has been shortlisted for the Rising Star category at the HRA (Heritage Railway Association) Annual Awards.
The NYMR is well equipped to provide skills and training in its two main apprentice areas of traction and rolling stock, and lineside conservation. The apprenticeship scheme helps young people to gain the skills they need for a future in heritage railways. At the NYMR, apprentices work towards a wide range of qualifications and practical skills, and many have since secured permanent paid work at the popular attraction.
Charlie Bauckham joined the Mechanical Apprenticeship intake from being a junior volunteer in September 2023 at Grosmont MPD (Motive Power Depot). He initially worked on the steam fleet, but showed a real talent for diesel fitting, and is now part of the diesel department.
In September 2023, Charlie made the decision to leave home and move to the area to pursue and develop his career and study with the training provider college in Teesside. Whilst working at MPD Charlie has combined academic studies and practical work, and is currently working hard at his Level 3 studies at Middlesbrough College and TTE; he has also been passed competent on numerous engineering and technical tasks.
On a day to day basis, he performs routine examinations of diesel; prepares and fuels locomotives; updates the crews; and has the loco off shed on time to meet the heavy traffic demand of the NYMR which Motive Power Depot needs to meet daily. Charlie continues to go above and beyond to help the whole organisation, and has signed up for fire patrols this year, is now a fully trained first aider, and is learning the role of diesel and now steam duty fitter to be available to work shifts.
Nick Simpson, Head of Mechanical Engineering at NYMR, said:
“Charlie’s star quality is his eagerness to learn. He always tackles projects methodically with an excellent standard of work. He goes the extra mile by always following this work up with ride outs, test trips and learning on the footplate. We could not ask more of the way he supports the team, deals with the pressures of workload and puts his all into supporting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.”
Charlie said:
“My journey of loco engineering started when I was 10 years old when I worked with Richard Gibbon CME (NRM) on 5” steam locos. Since then I was hooked and it’s an honour to be part of the NYMR team and be recognised as a Rising Star in the HRA Awards.”
The winners of the HRA Annual Awards will be revealed in March 2026. To find out more about the NYMR and their apprenticeship programme, visit https://www.nymr.co.uk/apprenticeship-schemes.
