A Yorkshire Coast town has applied for listed building consent for internal renovations.
The Grade-II Listed NatWest bank in Scarborough has applied for permission for internal works at its property at the junction of Westborough and Huntriss Row.
The bank is in the Scarborough conservation area and the town’s primary shopping area.
If plans are approved, the bank will remove and replace three cash machines and one coin car, together with “necessary adjustments to the automation wall”.
“Due to the proposed works being internal, and the wall not being original fabric, it will not affect the building’s significance or cause any harm to the asset,” according to submitted plans.
“Minor modifications are to be made to the wall, which was a previous intervention and minor changes to the existing ATM apertures are needed to house the new ATMs and create DDA compliance.”
NatWest said that the proposed replacement of the internal ATMs and rebranding of the automation wall would be “sympathetic and in keeping with the character of the Listed building and appropriate to what has previously been approved”.
“It is our opinion that this proposal for minimal intervention, with no alteration to the historic fabric and changes only to later interventions, will not have any adverse impact on the character and appearance of the Listed Building,” it added.
The application concludes:
“The council is requested to acknowledge that these proposals will have a positive impact on the Listed Building, are acceptable and that planning permission should be granted accordingly.”
North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the proposal which is open to representations from members of the public.
