A new support group for survivors of bereavement by suicide has launched in Scarborough and is to benefit from a fundraising event tonight.
The group, SOBS Scarborough, is part of the national charity Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS). This is the first SOBS group in the area, as people previously had to travel to York to attend meetings.
Ros Thompson set up the group after losing her sister to suicide three years ago she says being with others who understand is invaluable.
The group is run by people who have been bereaved by suicide, providing a unique peer-to-peer support system. This allows attendees to connect with others who understand the complex emotions associated with suicide, including guilt, wondering what they could have done differently, and questioning why it happened.
Ros says the the group helped her to deal with a complex web of emotions.
Ros adds that SOBS Scarborough offers both short-term and long-term support. It welcomes those who have been recently bereaved, as well as individuals whose loss occurred decades ago.
The group recognizes that the stigma surrounding suicide can prevent people from talking about their experiences, and aims to provide a safe and understanding space for all. Sharing stories and experiences not only helps attendees heal but also benefits others in the group.
Meetings are held in a private location, and it emphasises confidentiality and creates a safe space for open discussion. Ros says they cover a broad range of topics.
During meetings, attendees talk about whatever issues arise, and the discussions are tailored to the needs of those present. The emphasis on peer support and shared experiences fosters a sense of community and understanding. Ros says the group helps to foster conenctions between people that create an ongoing support network.
To raise awareness and funds, SOBS Scarborough is partnering with Solidarity Social for a fundraising event this Friday at the Railway Club from 7 pm.
The event will feature seven local DJs, including Ros Thompson. The Funky Tuesday choir will also perform.
Ros says that the event aims to raise awareness of the group and the support it offers, as well as raise funds through a raffle and donations.
