Five special steam-hauled Scarborough Spa Express trains will bring hundreds of passengers to the Yorkshire Coast this summer to mark the town's 400th anniversary as a spa resort.
Hundreds of passengers will travel to the Yorkshire Coast this summer aboard five special steam-hauled Scarborough Spa Express trains to celebrate a major historical milestone for the town.
The special services have been organised specifically to mark Scarborough’s 400th anniversary as a spa destination, bringing champagne-sipping travellers into the historic seaside resort throughout the summer season.
West Coast Railway will operate the celebratory services, utilising a stable of historic and highly regarded locomotives.
Among the famous engines expected to make the journey are the Scots Guardsman, the Galatea, and the Oliver Cromwell. The Oliver Cromwell holds a particularly special place in railway history, as it is noted for having pulled British Rail’s final steam train.
The five services will be split across two different routes, allowing passengers from various parts of the country to join the anniversary celebrations.
Three of the special express trains will depart from the West Coast at Carnforth. As they make their way across the country towards the coast, these trains will call at a number of stations, including Skipton, Keighley, Shipley, Woodlesford, Church Fenton, and York.
The remaining two services will originate in Lancaster. These trains are scheduled to pick up additional passengers en route at Preston, Blackburn, Brighouse, Wakefield, Castlefield, and finally York, before completing the journey to Scarborough.
The first of these celebratory trains is scheduled to arrive from Carnforth on Wednesday, 17 June. The summer programme will conclude with the final service making its journey from Lancaster on 2 September.
Passengers making the cross-country trip will be transported back in time, travelling in fully refurbished vintage carriages that date back to the 1950s.
To cater to different preferences, travellers are offered a choice of four distinct ticket classes. These include Standard, First Class, Premier First, and the top-tier Premier Dining experience.
Those opting for the Premier Dining option will be treated to a luxurious culinary experience. The journey to Scarborough will feature a full English breakfast accompanied by Bucks Fizz. The return trip in the evening will be equally lavish, offering passengers a four-course dinner served with wine and champagne as they travel home.
A spokesman for the train said:
"We are immensely proud to be playing our part in marking Scarborough’s 400th anniversary as a spa town.
Our trips to this queen of seaside resorts are always extremely popular, and we expect them to be even more so this summer."
