Scarborough Athletic have announced their opening pre-season fixtures away from home as North Yorkshire Council confirms pitch repairs at the Scarborough Sports Village are progressing well.
Scarborough Athletic Football Club has unveiled its initial schedule for pre-season friendlies, with all confirmed matches currently set to be played away from home.
The club has announced four away fixtures as they prepare for the upcoming campaign, noting that all matches remain subject to change.
The pre-season schedule begins on Saturday, 4th July, with a 1pm kick-off at Tadcaster.
This is followed by an evening fixture at Pickering on Friday, 10th July, starting at 7.45pm.
On Tuesday, 14th July, the team will travel to Wakefield for another 7.45pm kick-off.
The final currently confirmed away match will take place on Saturday, 18th July, against North Ferriby at 1pm.
The reason for the away start is due to ongoing works at their home ground. The club has stated that home fixtures at the Scarborough Sports Village are currently being planned, but they will only be able to confirm them once official clearance to use the ground is granted.
The facility, which is home to both Scarborough Athletic Football Club and Scarborough Ladies Football Club, has been undergoing significant repair work.
A survey conducted last year uncovered serious structural issues at the council-owned Scarborough Sports Village, which included a defective drainage system that had been installed when the facility was first built.
These issues have had a significant impact on the club. Scarborough Athletic had been playing its home fixtures at Bridlington Town’s stadium and requested financial support while it fixed the foundations and drainage system issues at the sports village.
Earlier this year, the council approved a £150,000 loan to help secure the club’s future amid the ongoing pitch problems.
North Yorkshire Council bosses have now provided a positive update on the progress of the repairs, confirming that the initial works are almost complete.
The local authority has committed to ensuring the repairs are finished in time for competitive matches to resume in August.
Speaking at a full meeting of North Yorkshire Council on Wednesday, May 20, Councillor Simon Myers, the executive member for arts, culture, and housing, said:
"Works are progressing well at the Scarborough Sports Village, with the initial phase of works to the pitch almost complete and the final stage of work, to resurface the pitch, expected to commence in May.
Final completion is expected well ahead of the start of the new football season."
