Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume has welcomed a government decision to cut the duty on red diesel to its lowest level in twenty years to support local farmers and businesses.
The Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby, Alison Hume, has welcomed the Government’s decision to reduce the duty on red diesel.
The move follows calls for action from the MP to support farmers and rural businesses who have been hit hard by rising operational costs.
Concerns have been growing across the region regarding price pressures linked to ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz, following the outbreak of hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran earlier this year.
Under the new measures, from the 15th of June until the end of the year, the duty on red diesel will be cut by more than a third.
The rate will drop from 10.18p to 6.48p per litre, bringing the duty to its lowest level in approximately twenty years.
The announcement comes after Ms Hume raised the issue in Parliament last month. She had previously met with local farmers to hear first-hand about the significant challenges they were facing due to what she described as skyrocketing prices.
Alison Hume said:
"This will bring some much-needed relief for farmers and businesses across Scarborough, Whitby and our villages, who have been dealing with real pressures through no fault of their own.
What happens on the global stage can have a direct impact here at home and it was vital that these concerns were heard.
I’m really pleased the Government has listened and acted."
Alison Hume added:
"While this won’t solve every problem, it is an important step in supporting our rural communities and others who rely on red diesel.
I’ll keep working to make sure the voices of people in Scarborough and Whitby continue to be listened to."
The reduction in red diesel duty sits alongside a package of other government measures designed to ease cost pressures on motorists and industries.
These include the extension of the 5p fuel duty cut, which will now remain in place until the end of 2026.
Additionally, the Government has introduced a twelve-month road tax holiday for hauliers, who will now be required to pay just £1 at their next renewal.
