North Yorkshire Council carried out more than a hundred spot checks on Blue Badges in Scarborough and Harrogate to protect accessible parking spaces, with no instances of misuse identified.
North Yorkshire Council has been conducting checks as part of a campaign to ‘protect the rights’ of the county’s Blue Badge holders.
More than a hundred spot checks were recently carried out by council officers in Scarborough and Harrogate as part of National Blue Badge Awareness Week.
The coordinated effort sought to ensure spaces remain available for those who need them most. The Blue Badge scheme provides vital support to residents with mobility issues, allowing them to park closer to their destinations.
On Friday, May 15, council officers worked alongside Veritau, the organisation responsible for investigating fraud on behalf of the authority, to carry out spot checks in Harrogate and Scarborough.
A total of 141 badges were inspected, with no instances of misuse identified.
Council leader, Cllr Carl Les, said:
“This day of action is important in making sure the Blue Badge scheme is respected and protected.
“These badges provide essential support for people with mobility challenges, and it is vital they are used properly so those who need them most can access parking.
“While it’s reassuring no misuse was identified during these checks, we will continue to monitor the scheme and take action where needed. We want to be clear that misuse will not be tolerated.”
Misuse of the badge can limit access for those who rely on the scheme, NYC noted.
The authority said:
“This includes using someone else’s badge when the holder is not present, using a badge after the holder has passed away, or displaying one that is expired, lost or stolen.”
Offenders may face prosecution and fines of up to £1,000.
More than 140 councils took part in similar enforcement activity last year, resulting in more than 10,000 badges being inspected nationwide.
The Government website states:
“You must never give the badge to friends or family to allow them to have the benefit of the parking concessions. You must never use a copied badge to park or try to change the details on a badge.
“The badge remains the property of the issuing local council. They can ask for the badge to be returned if it is being misused.”
North Yorkshire residents can apply for, or renew, a blue badge on NYC’s website. A blue badge costs £10. including replacements and renewals. If an application is unsuccessful, the payment will be refunded.
