A packed programme of exhibitions, arts events, and a new bronze sculpture have been announced to mark 400 years since the discovery of Scarborough's spa waters.
Scarborough is preparing for a landmark year of celebrations to mark the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of its spa waters, a moment that established the town as Britain's first seaside resort.
The town's spa legacy began in 1626 when Thomasin Farrer discovered mineral springs beneath the cliffs near the current Scarborough Spa.
These waters, which stained the rocks a russet colour and tasted slightly bitter, were believed to cure minor ailments. Word spread of their beneficial effects, and drinking the waters soon became an accepted medicine, transforming the town into a fashionable health retreat.
To commemorate the anniversary, a new bronze sculpture named 'Aqua Vitalis' will be installed close to Scarborough Spa.
Internationally renowned sculptor Jethro Crabb has been commissioned to create the artwork, which will feature a striking female figure inspired by Thomasin Farrer.
A wide-ranging programme of events is being coordinated throughout the year by North Yorkshire Council alongside local organisations, supported by Arts Council England.
North Yorkshire Council's executive member for arts and culture, Councillor Simon Myers, highlighted the importance of community involvement.
Councillor Myers said:
"Scarborough is one of our most popular destinations and attracts visitors from across the country every year, but it is such a special place to live as well. We want to make sure that everyone in Scarborough has the opportunity to get involved in events to mark the occasion."
Scarborough-based arts organisation Animated Objects, which specialises in performances using giant artworks, illuminations, and large-scale puppets, is organising a year-long series of events.
The artistic director of Animated Objects, Lee Threadgold, shared his hopes for the upcoming programme.
Mr Threadgold said:
"We and other organisations across Scarborough have lined up a varied programme of events, so hopefully this will appeal to as many people as possible to enjoy what is on offer and to get involved themselves in helping to mark such an important anniversary for the town."
Community activities and workshops will take place throughout May and June, including creative sessions during the May half-term holiday at venues such as the Scarborough Sea Life Centre, Woodend Creative Workspace, and Eastfield Library.
Professional artists will be on hand to help residents create large-scale lanterns and sculptures inspired by the anniversary.
A specific historic lantern-making event is scheduled at St Mary's Church on the twenty-fourth of May, aimed at adults and children aged seven and over.
A centrepiece celebration is planned for the SeaFest weekend on the eighteenth and nineteenth of July in the Ocean Room at The Spa.
This free family event will feature a life-sized, handcrafted cardboard reconstruction of the original Victorian spa pump room, allowing visitors to experience the historic underground space that is no longer accessible due to the elements.
The SeaFest celebration will also include a Lego model of The Spa building, creative writing sessions, and a community village of stalls from local charities and organisations.
Later in the year, Animated Objects will stage the tenth edition of their annual community lantern parade at Peasholm Park.
Taking place on the twenty-seventh of November as part of the Scarborough Sparkle weekend, the parade will feature the theme 'Scarborough - the next 400 Years'.
Other highlights throughout the year include a giant deckchair trail running from June to August, inviting people to take a seat back in time and discover the history of the original seaside resort.
Scarborough Art Gallery will also host a brand-new exhibition titled 'Dive In! Four Hundred Years of Water, Wellness and Seaside Fun', which opens in September to tell the story of the town's transformation into a health retreat.
Furthermore, the eightieth Anniversary Gold Cup at Oliver's Mount in September will celebrate both the race circuit's milestone and the Scarborough 400 festivities.
