The route for this year's Trackrod Rally Yorkshire is being changed due to the moorland fires that continue to burn towards the northern end of the Langdale forest.
The special stages in Langdale forest will not be used this year, as the event organisers enter the final planning for the biggest motor sport event of the year in the region.
The Filey-based rally is one of the major rallies in the UK each year and attracts up to 180 competitors. The event brings hundreds of thousands of pounds of revenue to the area.
Rod Parkin, Clerk of the Course of the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire said:
"The fires that have been burning for several weeks continue to plague the open moorland, where extensive peat bogs are burning and will take some time before being finally extinguished. Local firefighters, farmers and volunteers are mounting a Herculean effort to contain the fires and should be applauded for their on-going hard work and dedication.
“Everyone involved in the rally appreciates the huge effort being made to deal with this disaster. Understandably, permission to use Langdale has been withdrawn, and that is a decision that we wholly support.”
In order to preserve the planned route as much as possible the format is being changed and another special stage will be used for a second time during the revised event. All other stages will run as planned, and the leg on Friday night, including the Dalby forest stage, is unchanged.
Parkin said:
“I'd like to thank all of our organising team for responding so quickly and positively to this major change. It is vital that this rally plays its part in supporting the local communities that are being so badly impacted by these fires. As an event, we will be contributing to the fund set up to support the firefighters, farmers and volunteers.”
