East Riding: New Mayor's Annual Allowance Confirmed

How much Luke Campbell will be paid as the Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire has been signed off by the Combined Authority’s Executive Board.

On May 1, the former Olympic gold medallist boxer, Mr Campbell, was elected as the region’s first Mayor. At a meeting of the Combined Authority’s Executive Board held on Thursday, members approved the annual ‘allowance’ that Mr Campbell will receive as Mayor.

Mr Campbell briefly left the room, in what was his second Executive Board meeting as Mayor, as the rest of the board approved recommendations that the his allowance should be set at £72,000.

There is no set Mayoral salary that each Mayor across England is paid. For example, the Mayor of the nearby Greater Lincolnshire Combined Authority, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, will be paid more than her Reform UK companion north of the Humber, as Dame Andrea’s allowance has been set at £86,060, Lincolnshire Live reports.

According to the Institute for Government, in 2022/23 the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was paid £154,963 from his Mayoral role.

The report that has been approved by the Executive Board explains that Mr Campbell's allowance was calculated by comparing the role against other similar roles across the country. The report stated that the “Tees Valley Combined Authority was the best comparable area to use as a benchmark.”

The Tees Valley CA area has a similar population to Hull and East Yorkshire and two areas received similar devolution deals, the report explains.

Interestingly, the report states:

“The Panel felt it was important to set the allowance for this role above the Local Authority Leader allowances and below Member of Parliament allowances.”

MPs are paid £93,904 a year.

The report also explains that the panel “considered the PCCs (Police and Crime Commissioner) allowance and felt that this was a good benchmark, although they considered and took into account the PCC covered a larger area and their remit was significantly different from the remit of the Combined Authority.” According to the Government’s website, the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner is paid £78,400 a year.
