It's part of its commitment to maintaining its 2,000-mile road network, says Councillor Anne Handley, the council’s leader:
The council aims to manage this vast network to the best possible standard with the resources it has available. This network is used daily by the majority of residents and is fundamental to the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area.

The council leader says that the authority’s Investment in the highways network has ensured that the A-road network is among the best in the country in terms of condition.
Councillor Handley highlighted the achievements of the council’s highways team, which is ranked among the best in the country:
The council's highways team handled over 15,500 enquiries last year. Councillor Handley added that the service is adapting and becoming more resilient to future challenges.
