It’s another game where the importance can’t be understated for Bridlington Town, as they look to continue a recent run of good form when they travel to Heaton Stannington.
The Seasiders have won three of their last four games, picking up victories against Ashington AFC and Pontefract Collieries, though they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away from home against Consett AFC.
However, Bridlington picked up a crucial 2-0 victory most recently against relegation rivals Sherwood Colliery.
The Seasiders capitalised on a missed penalty for the visitors, as minutes later captain Simon Heslop opened the scoring, slamming the ball home following a corner. The veteran midfielder scored his only other goal of the season in the reverse fixture, which also finished 2-0 to Bridlington.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Tom Allan’s header hit the post, before Robson Doolan could only convert into his own goal to double the hosts’ advantage.
Head coach Mike Thompson said:
“We are over the moon, the clean sheet was massive - we drilled it into the boys before the match. Last week was a bit strange to lose the game 4-0. We have played a lot worse, but it’s been swings and roundabouts.”
The Seasiders welcomed Josh Barrett and Michael Coulson back into the starting lineup, who had both been missing through illness and a knee injury, respectively.
Matty Dixon, however, missed out following a hamstring injury picked up against Consett, forcing Sam Kay to operate in a deeper role alongside Heslop.
Bridlington remain in the relegation zone in 19th, though they’re level on points with Heaton Stannington in one place above, with the Newcastle-based side having played a game fewer.
The Stan were also victorious last weekend, defeating Ossett United 3-1, thanks to a second half brace by Konner Lamb, after Joe Shepherd opened the scoring on the hour mark.
It backed up a 3-0 midweek win against Newcastle United U21 in the Northumberland Senior Cup, which saw Heaton Stannington progress to the final.
