Appeal For Dog Walkers Who Intervened In Whitby Assault

Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly a couple walking a dog, after a woman suffered a head injury during an assault in Whitby.

North Yorkshire Police have launched an appeal for witnesses and information following an assault that occurred on Church Street in Whitby.

The incident took place at approximately 9.20pm on Monday the 25th of May 2026.

According to the force, the altercation involved a male suspect assaulting a female victim near the bus stop situated in the Church Street area.

As a result of the incident, the female victim sustained a head injury, alongside visible bruising to both her arms and legs.

Officers investigating the case have confirmed that a man in his fifties has been arrested in connection with the assault.

The suspect has since been released on police bail while further enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the event continue to be carried out.

Investigators are now reaching out to the local community in Whitby, stating that they would like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity at the time and who may have witnessed the assault taking place.

In particular, the police have highlighted a specific couple they wish to identify who stepped in to assist the victim during the attack.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said:

"We’re also particularly keen to speak to a man and woman who were walking a dog at the time and who we believe may have intervened to help. If this was you, or if you have any information that could assist our investigation, please get in touch."

The force is urging the couple walking the dog, or anyone else with relevant details, to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Members of the public can provide information by emailing the investigating officer directly at Annika.Penrose1@northyorkshire.police.uk.
