Yorkshire Coast MP Hosts Labour Party Conference Discussion on Small-Scale Fracking

Scarborough and Whitby MP, Alison Hume, has hosted a roundtable at this week's Labour Party Conference, aimed at addressing the issue of small-scale fracking.

The local MP hosted the event in light of the ongoing planning application by Europa Oil and Gas at Burniston.

The discussion centred around the controversial technique known as "proppant squeeze," which is proposed for use in Burniston, close to the North York Moors National Park.

Alison Hume welcomed several key figures to the roundtable, including Connor Rand MP, the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ed Miliband, and fellow MPs Andy MacNae and Abdi Suleiman from Friends of the Earth. Also present were representatives from various environmental organizations, such as Alex Chitty from the Low Carbon Energy Forum (LCEF), Ben Carter from the Society for Environmental Research and Advocacy (SERA), and members of Frack Free Coastal Communities, Chris Garforth and John Buckley, who participated remotely from North Yorkshire.

During the meeting, Alison Hume emphasised the necessity of extending the current moratorium on fracking to encompass the proppant squeeze method. "We need to close this loophole and ban fracking for good," she stated, underlining her commitment to protecting the environment and local communities from the potential impacts of fracking activities.

The roundtable reflects a growing concern among local leaders and environmental advocates about the implications of fracking in the region.

While the outcome of the planning application by Europa Oil and Gas remains to be seen, the voices at the roundtable seemed determined to influence the government's stance on fracking.
