After over two decades of dedicated service, Mike Major has retired as chairman of Whitby Lifeboat Station, marking the end of an era for the local lifeboat community.
Mike's volunteering work with Whitby lifeboat station began over 20 years ago, in 2014 he took on the role of Education Volunteer, eventually leading to his appointment as station chairman in 2018.
During his tenure, Mike Major demonstrated unwavering commitment to the RNLI, chairing meetings and providing vital support to volunteers in various capacities, including event organisation, fundraising, and raising public awareness of the institution's mission. His contributions extended beyond the lifeboat station, as he actively engaged with the local seafaring community, sharing his expertise with organisations such as rowing clubs and participating in events like the Whitby Regatta.
Senior station technician Richard Dowson expressed gratitude for Mike's service, stating,
"We would like to thank Mike for his friendship, time and dedication over the last ten years. Mike has been a great support to both the crew and Friends of Whitby Lifeboat."
Though retiring from his leadership role, Mike Major will continue to support the RNLI in a new capacity, serving as an Education and Water Safety Volunteer from his home in the Wales, West and Isle of Man Region.
In a seamless transition, Nicola Narey from the station visits team has been appointed to succeed Mike as chairman. The community extends its best wishes to her in this new position, ensuring that the legacy of Mike Major’s service will continue to inspire future generations of lifeboat volunteers.
