Yorkshire Coast Continues Royal Proclamation Tradition

Proclamation ceremonies took place along the Yorkshire Coast yesterday publicly confirming King Charles as the new monarch.

The traditional ceremonies took place in Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington.

In Scarborough the proclamation took place in the gardens at the side of the Town Hall in Scarborough, read by the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Councillor Eric Broadbent.

In Whitby the ceremony took place on Dock End with the Deputy Town Mayor, Cllr Bob Dalrymple introducing the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Capt. Stephen Upright, who read the Proclamation,. This was followed by prayers offered by the Reverend Michal Gobbett.

In Bridlington a ceremony took place at the War Memorial Gardens with the Deputy Mayor reading the proclamation.

Scarborough and Whitby MP Sir Robert Goodwill thinks it's important the events took place.

Hundreds of people turned out for the public proclamation ceremonies.

Traditionally the events would have been the way that the public learnt of a change in Monarch.

Mike Greene is Chief Exec of Scarborough Borough Council - he was pleased to see the tradition continue.

Hundreds of people turned out for the ceremony in Scarborough which concluded with a rendition of the National Anthem.

In Bridlington the Proclamation was read by the Deputy Mayor with a strong local turnout.
