Residents along the Yorkshire Coast are being urged to take extra care as a yellow weather warning for ice is set to take effect.
The Met Office has issued the alert for North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, warning of potential disruption to travel and a risk of injury.
The warning is scheduled to begin at midnight on Wednesday, 28th January 2026, and will remain in place until 10:00 that morning. According to the Met Office, "clearing skies Tuesday night will allow temperatures to fall below freezing soon after midnight". This drop in temperature, following a period of wet weather, is expected to lead to the development of icy patches on surfaces that have not been treated.
Potential Impacts and Safety Risks
The weather service has highlighted several risks that coastal residents may face during the morning commute. Specifically, the Met Office warns that the public should expect:
- Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
- Icy patches forming on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
The organisation suggests that families and individuals "plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal". They assert that by not needing to rush, people can significantly reduce the "risk of accidents, slips, and falls".
Advice for Travellers
For those who must travel on Wednesday morning, the Met Office provides specific guidance to ensure safety. Pedestrians are encouraged to "use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery". Similarly, those travelling by bicycle are advised to "stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated".
Drivers and users of public transport are also encouraged to be proactive. The Met Office recommends "checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables" before setting off, allowing for amendments to travel plans if necessary.
As weather conditions can be unpredictable, officials remind the public that it is vital to stay informed. The Met Office recommends "staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area," as warnings can change quickly.
