Historic Costumes Will Go On Display In New Scarborough Exhibition

A four-week heritage fashion exhibition featuring twenty garments from the 1850s to the 1950s will open at Scarborough's Old Parcels Office this Saturday, followed by a special parade on Sunday.

Original period costumes will go on display for a new four-week heritage exhibition starting this Saturday at the Old Parcels Office in Scarborough.

Titled 'Sunday Best', the historical showcase features twenty garments alongside storyboards detailing a century of the seaside town's history.

A special parade will also take place this weekend to mark the occasion, culminating at Scarborough Spa on Sunday.

The showcase provides a close-up look at local fashion evolution, spanning from the Victorian era up to the mid-twentieth century.

Chair of Scarborough Studios, Sally Gorham, says the organisation is excited to launch the upcoming autumn events following a busy summer season:

"Yeah, we've had a really busy summer and we've got a lot of great things coming up for the autumn. Starting on Saturday, we open with our fantastic heritage exhibition, titled Sunday Best. So we've got 20 period costumes which with storyboards tell the the history of Scarborough really from about 1850 up to the 1950s. The costumes in the exhibition. We've got the the earliest one is dates from about 1850, so, for anybody who's a Jane, an Anne Bronte fan, you know, it's a sort of dress that she might have worn when she came to Scarborough."

The diverse collection captures changing trends over the decades, giving visitors an insight into the seaside attire of past generations.

Sally added:

"And then we've got things going right the way through the sort of flapper dress, the Edwardian dresses and then through to the the 1950s. and we've even got an old-fashioned with the bloomers swimsuit as well from around 1900. So, these original costumes, people can encounter them close-up and see them for themselves. So, that's also really for anybody who's interested in either history of Scarborough or fashion really going to be something to see."

Sunday Best is a heritage exhibition celebrating the tradition of travelling to the seaside dressed in your finest clothes. From elegant Victorian promenades to the changing fashions of the 1920s, 30s and beyond, discover how a visit to Scarborough was once as much about style and social ritual as it was about the sea.

Featuring period costumes and accessories, historic photographs and themed displays, the exhibition explores everything from bathing costumes to the rise of Scarborough’s famous department stores and the art of promenading along the Esplanade and Queen’s Parade.

Part of Heritage Open Days and the Scarborough 400 celebrations, this exhibition brings the story of Scarborough’s seaside heritage vividly to life.
