Whitby's 'Record-Breaking' 50th Boxing Day Dip

This year's event was the 50th anniversary of Whitby's Boxing Day Dip.

Hundreds turned out in various costumes bravely running into the North Sea.

Organisers say it was a record-breaking year with 418 people taking part- and over £5,000 raised for local good causes.

One of those running things was Brian Harrison:

"Absolutely amazing. Smashed all the records that money that we all collected in. And then throughout the year we'll donate that to various local Whitby charities and good causes. At the moment, we are doing a Whitby community grant scheme at the moment where clubs, schools, charities, small little clubs can apply for funding.

"And that's running until the end of January and we'll release the funding in sort of February, March time, so some of that funding will go towards that. So it's another very successful year, many thousands of people coming down to watch the Dip. We would like to thank all the Lions members who came and helped. I say we were only a small club of 18 members."

He says others pitched in too:

" We also had great help from many family and friends who came down of the members, helped set up and pack up, and did street collecting. Really amazing effort. It's really a great sort of family event. And I'd also like to thank the Whitby Scuba Diver Club. Who did the water safety, which was amazing.

"Also, the lifeboat that came out, all the crew and everything were on the beach to make sure everyone was safe. And the Whitby Coastguard team as well, they also came out to make sure everyone was safe and the medics UK as well, because they were PR providing paramedic cover as well.

"So great effort from everyone. Just a fantastic event raised so much money and everything."
