Whitby Town experienced their first loss of the 2026/27 pre-season campaign after falling to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of a clinical West Auckland Town side.
Whitby Town have suffered their first defeat of the pre-season schedule ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 campaign, falling to a 3-0 loss against a clinical West Auckland Town side.
The Seasiders were ultimately punished by their hosts, who made a bright and energetic start to the fixture. West Auckland threatened the Whitby goal inside the opening three minutes of the match when Ben Dale rose highest to meet a free-kick delivery, but he could only direct his header over the crossbar.
However, the home side did not have to wait long to break the deadlock. In the sixth minute of the game, former Whitby Town player James Harrison found the back of the net against his old club. He kept his composure to finish accurately from close range, despite finding himself under intense pressure from the visiting defence.
West Auckland continued to press forward, and Joshua Scott tested Whitby goalkeeper Jack Norton just three minutes later, though the shot-stopper was only required to make a routine save on this occasion.
The Seasiders thought they had found a swift response and drawn level on the ten-minute mark. Callum Hickman successfully converted after Adam Gell delivered a dangerous low ball into the penalty box, but the Whitby celebrations were abruptly cut short by the linesman's offside flag.
As the match progressed, Whitby grew into the game and started to carry a genuine attacking threat of their own. On fourteen minutes, Ben Turner forced West Auckland goalkeeper Matthew Cassap into action with a powerful long-range effort.
At the other end of the pitch, Norton was able to watch a low strike from James Hughes roll safely wide of the post just a minute later.
Whitby began to enjoy a greater share of possession as the first half wore on. They nearly found a way back into the contest in the twenty-ninth minute when a trialist midfielder drove forward on a rapid counter-attack, before curling an effort narrowly wide of the target.
Despite Whitby's growing pressure, which included Gell drawing a low save from Cassap in the thirty-seventh minute, it was the hosts who doubled their advantage late in the first half. Finley O’Gorman raced through on goal and finished confidently in a one-on-one situation against Norton to make it 2-0 before the break.
Whitby emerged for the second half determined to find a route back into the match, but West Auckland continued to create dangerous chances. Norton produced an excellent save five minutes after the restart, getting down well to tip away another low effort from Hughes.
The Seasiders continued to battle hard and enjoyed extended spells of possession throughout the second period. However, clear-cut opportunities proved increasingly difficult to come by against a well-organised West Auckland defensive unit.
The home side eventually completed the scoring just three minutes from full-time. A miscued clearance from Norton allowed Josh Scott to regain possession in a dangerous area and square the ball across the face of the goal. This left Connor Shields with the simple task of finding the empty net to seal the 3-0 victory.
While the final result marks Whitby Town’s first defeat of their pre-season schedule, the fixture provided the squad with another valuable physical test as their preparations continue in earnest for the new campaign.
