With household food waste collections not expected to be introduced in North yorkshire anytime soon, Whitby residents are being encouraged to compost more of their waste.
The Government wants separate household food waste collections, across the country by 2025 but in North Yorkshire the collections may not start for another 20 years due to cost and contractual issues.
Whitby Councillor Neil Swannick says there is however some good news for Whitby residents who want to make better use of their food waste.
The Government wants separate household food waste collections, across the country by 2025. The measure is seen as a good way of reducing carbon emissions and over half of the country's local authorities already collect food waste separately as it significantly improves recycling rates.
But North Yorkshire is being given consent to delay the introduction of the separate collections until 2043 due to both a lack of clarity about the costs involved, and already being tied to long term contracts for waste collection.
North Yorkshire Council say
"more than a third of the contents of the average rubbish bin is biodegradable and can be composted easily. However, it is important to get the mix right. Items such as grass clippings, veg and fruit peelings, salad leaves and old flowers will make up the ‘green waste’ and contain nitrogen. These materials are quick to rot and provides compost with moisture. We also need to put in ‘brown waste’, which are materials slower to rot, providing fibre and air pockets in the mixture. Materials such as egg and cereal boxes, shredded paper, scrunched up cardboard, paper or even vacuum bag contents all contain carbon and will help the composting process."
The new compost bins are made in the UK from 100 per cent recycled plastic and have a windproof secure push-fit lid, removable side hatch and are guaranteed for seven year
