Whitby Log Cabin Approved For Build

A log cabin can be built at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary after plans were given the go-ahead by North Yorkshire Council.

The construction of a log cabin providing a dedicated indoor space for education and learning, as well as facilities for community workshops and conservation activities at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary, has been approved.

The single-storey detached timber-built log cabin will be located to the south-east of the site, at Stainsacre Lane, Whitby, with a pitched roof that is 3.64m in height to the ridge of the roof.

According to a report, the cabin will be 7.6 meters in depth and 10.4 meters in length, and will comprise a single-storey structure.

The Wildlife Sanctuary is sited on former agricultural land comprising several out-buildings, aviaries, fencing, and other means of enclosure for animals.

To the south-west of the site lies the Broomfield Farm, which has a converted barn for the use of holiday lets on-site.

Founded in 2009, Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary takes in almost “3,000 rescues a year with a team of more than 170 dedicated volunteers”, its website states.

The applicant said:

“The log cabin is essential to the functional operation, consolidation and development of Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary, an established rural wildlife rescue rehabilitation centre.

“It represents a sustainable low-impact form of development that supports rural activity, conservation, and public engagement.”

Planning officers concluded that the cabin would not result in harm to the character of the countryside and can be constructed subject to conditions.
