North Yorkshire Council has warned of the significant strain recent heatwaves have placed on coastal services, urging residents to take care as a new yellow Heat Health Alert comes into effect.
The heatwaves this summer have placed ‘significant pressures’ on coastal services in North Yorkshire.
Council bosses have warned of the “significant additional pressure” faced by services on the North Yorkshire coast during a recent heatwave.
It comes as a yellow Heat Health Alert has been put in place from Wednesday, July 8, at 9am until Sunday, July 12, at 9am.
Cllr Richard Foster, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for the environment, said a recent heatwave had impacted street cleansing as well as commercial waste collection and the public convenience network.
Speaking ahead of a full meeting next week, he said the authority had learned valuable lessons.
He said:
“I would like to recognise how effectively teams responded, how additional resources were quickly mobilised, and how services worked collaboratively to maintain standards.
“Crucially, we have also captured key learnings from that period to strengthen our resilience ahead of future peaks in demand.”
North Yorkshire Council has asked residents to “look out for people more vulnerable to heat, such as older people, younger people and those with existing health conditions” as yellow alerts have been issued in Yorkshire and The Humber.
The authority also reminded people to “take care around open water”.
A spokesperson said:
“While rivers, lakes and the coast can look like a tempting place to cool off, they are full of hidden dangers.
“Even on warm days, the water temperature can be dangerously cold, and hidden dangers like tides, currents, hidden rocks and vegetation can catch even experienced swimmers off guard.”
The latest alert follows warnings that rising temperatures could increase health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
The council’s website notes:
“Hot weather places a strain on the heart and lungs, and so for that reason, the majority of serious illnesses and deaths caused by heat are respiratory or cardiovascular. Older people, those with pre-existing health conditions and young children are particularly at risk.”
