Bridlington Woman Doubles Walking Challenge To ‘Go The Extra Mile’ For Saint Catherine’s

A Bridlington woman who walked 1,500 miles to raise funds for Saint Catherine's is now aiming to complete an incredible 3,000-mile challenge.

Louise Brown has been walking every day since April to raise money in memory of dear friend Ray Francis MBE, who passed away at the hospice in December.

Ray was a veteran serving his country for 23 years in the army, even getting mentioned in dispatches. He then became a prison officer, and a prisoner nominated him for his MBE for services to charity.

He helped many charities including the Special Olympics, Prison Service Games, Riding for the Disabled and Parkinson’s UK.

Louise’s initial plan was to walk 100 miles a week for 15 weeks, as Ray was in Saint Catherine’s for 15 nights. The distance of 1,500 is also significant as it costs around £1,500 for provide 24 hours of care for a patient.

However, Louise has now extended her challenge to 3,000 miles, saying: “Saint Catherine’s go the extra mile, so I will too.”

She added:

“At the moment, if I walk another 888.4 miles, I will have covered the distance to the Earth’s core. I have found the walking easier than I thought and wanted to make it more of a challenge.”

So far, Louise has raised over £4,000 and says she is ‘shocked and amazed’ at the amount.

She added:

“The support has been brilliant, particularly from the Bridlington Veteran’s Group and the team at Saint Catherine’s.”

Louise has been accessing support from the Wellbeing the team at the hospice and says she is incredibly grateful for everything they do.

She was also thrilled to receive a letter from Prince William, wishing her well in her challenge and acknowledging the amazing work and wonderful staff at Saint Catherine’s.
