The Borough Council has issued a warning about the scam.
The Council is asking residents to be on the lookout for bogus letters about the £150 energy rebate, which some residents have received.
The Council say:
"The fake letters reported to us appear to be branded with our logo and ask people to supply their bank card details, including the three digit security code.
Our official council letters to inform those who do not pay their council tax by direct debit how to apply for the rebate, are not due to land on doormats until the weekend of 9 and 10 April at the earliest. The letters will only ask people to supply bank account details via our website. We will not ask for bank card numbers and security codes.
If you have any concerns about whether the energy rebate correspondence you or someone you know receives is genuine, call our council tax team on 01723 232323."
